M.A.P.S.
was founded by Cheryl Coleman and Moira Felgate who, like a lot of people, were
appalled at the extent of animal cruelty and neglect in Mozambique. With the
support of WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals), a UK based
association, M.A.P.S. has emerged as a NGO here in Mozambique - the first of
its kind currently in this country!
The M.A.P.S. Mission is to stamp out cruelty to animals through intervention, education and legislation.
Intervention: When you see an animal being abused to be able to step in and stop that abuse.
Education: 90% of cruelty is through ignorance, only 10% is with malicious intent.
Legislation: To have the necessary legislation behind us to enable us to remove an abused animal and in severe cases to be able to prosecute the offended.
Through our efforts, and with your support, we hope to:
We are on a mission to promote compassion for all creatures and to advance the well being of animals and people alike by nurturing relationships between humans and animals, and educating the next generation about animal welfare. We will work for the welfare of companion animals, farm animals (work and food) and wild animals.
The welfare of an animal includes its physical and mental state and we consider that good animal welfare implies both fitness and a sense of well-being.
We believe that any animal kept by man must at least be protected from unnecessary suffering in terms of 'five freedoms'
1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by easy access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
2. Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment, including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
